Praekelt Foundation is proud to be one of three organizations asked by Johnson&Johnson and USAID to lead the proposal development for the MAMA project for South Africa. Our partners in this process is the Wits Reproductive Health & HIV Institute WRHI (formally RHRU), and Cell-Life.

As partners, we hosted a very successful partners workshop on 5 and 6 September in Pretoria. The workshop was well attended by over 30 stakeholder - including all four network operators in South Africa. Thank you to CellC, 8TA, Vodacom and MTN for showing your commitment to addressing this national priority of improving maternal health, through mobile technology. Thank you also to the National Department of Health and all other stakeholders who are leaders in the field of maternal health who will work with us to shape MAMA in South Africa.
MAMA is an initiative funded by Johnson&Johnson and USAID that aims to use mobile technologies (such as cellphones) to address maternal health challenges in three countries: South Africa, India and Bangladesh. MAMA's mission is to use mobile technology to empower expectant and new mothers to make healthy decisions, that will positively impact their lives, and that of their unborn and new babies. Johnson&Johnson and USAID have committed $10 Million for the three countries, over three years.
